Beer Tasting: Southern Tier 2XIPA

Southern Tier 2XIPA
8.2% ABV
Enjoyed 07.25.14

An after work invitation to the local Ogden tap house provided the inspiration for this delightful ale. While many other options were available I had not had this particular beer on draft before.

Observations: Although the double IPA category encompasses a fairly wide variety of ales, this one toes the low end of the line at being a double in terms of alcohol, but the massive citrus and seemingly pure grapefruit flavor is addictive. Very little aroma is noticeable apart from some faint bitter lemon. This beer is all about the clean, crisp grapefruit flavor and a solid but not overwhelming bitterness to finish it out (as is to be expected from a double). The mouth feel on this beer is excellent and a higher level of carbonation compliments the citrus flavors and helps it go down with ease.

Conclusions: If you’re looking for a solid double on the lower ABV end of the spectrum you can’t go wrong with the 2XIPA.  Grapefruit juice will never be the same for you after you imbibe this beer!
