Beer Tasting: Green Flash Le Freak

Green Flash Le Freak Belgian Imperial IPA

9.2% ABV, 101 IBU

Enjoyed on 8.3.2014

I like to think of this beer as the nerdy kid who has a really hard time in high school. Then, when he gets to college, he learns to embrace his quirks, laugh at himself, and ends up rolling up to his high school reunion as the head of some multi-million dollar start-up company. In any case, this beer a prime example of when outside-the-box thinking has really paid off.

Le Freak pours a deep gold with an amber tint and a white head. There aren’t a ton of hops in the nose, but the fruity Belgian notes come through in the aroma. With the first sip, you’ll wish you had more taste buds to experience everything it has to offer. A fusion between a tripel, a fairly sweet and fruity style, and an imperial IPA, usually dominated by hops and caramels, does seem a bit risky. However, Green Flash really pulled it off. The flavor opens sweet and fruity like a tripel, moving smoothly to the citrus flavors from the hops. The finish brings a small amount of bitterness and a trace of alcohol flavor, but nothing hijacks the palate.

Overall, it’s incredible how Le Freak manages to pack so much flavor (and 9.2% alcohol) into such a light and well balanced beer. It’s definitely a sipper, and definitely something you want to sit down and get to know. But truly one of the best beers I've had in a while, and I highly recommend it.
